Who runs the internet?
  • Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)The principal body engaged in the development of new internet protocol standard specifications. The IETF is an open and international community.
  • Internet Architecture Board (IAB) - This is a committee of the IETF and provides guidance and broad direction to the IETF. The IAB is also responsible for Request for Comments (RFC) document series.
  • Request for Comments (RFC) is a formal documented from the IETF that is drafted by a committee and subsequently reviewed by interested parties.
  • Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers and Names (ICANN) - it's main function is to coordinate the assignment of the internet domain names, IP address numbers and protocol parameters.
  • Internet Assigned numbers authority (IANA) coordinated the functions of the ICANN up until 1998.
